Azerbaijan will assume the chairmanship of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) in 2026, Deputy Secretary General of the OTS Omer Kocaman said in an interview with Report.
He noted that the OTS plans to hold a major congress in Baku dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the First Turkological Congress, where the issue of a unified Turkic alphabet will be raised again.
"A common language and alphabet have always been subjects of discussion. Now significant progress has been made in this direction. For the first time in the history of Turkic states, an alphabet of 34 letters was approved. In 1926, the First Turkological Congress was held in Baku, where a common alphabet was adopted. We are preparing for the 100th anniversary of this event, and I believe that by 2026 the issue of a unified alphabet should be finally resolved. During Azerbaijan's chairmanship of the OTS, we will hold a large congress in Baku and once again announce to the world about a unified alphabet," he added.
