Turkmenistan coast of Caspian Sea becomes frozen, hits new record temperature

Even the Caspian Sea was not left out of the strong weather trend during the unusually frosty days for Turkmenistan's winter.

The Turkmenistan coast of the Caspian Sea froze and created rare scenes in the area, SIA refers to "ORIENT" information portal.

Almost every year during winter, only the northern part of the Caspian Sea, located within several climatic zones, freezes. Its southwestern and southern coasts are located in the subtropics, while the eastern coast has a desert climate.

However, in the northern part of the Caspian Sea, anomalous ice thickness exceeding the usual indicators for this time by about 30 percent was discovered.

According to the report, the thin fragile snow cover does not cause problems for navigation, the international port of Turkmenbashi works in normal mode, but such cases are very rare here.

Record low temperatures have been reported in Turkmenistan. The absolute minimum temperature record has been broken in Turkmenabad since 1894.

On Friday, the mercury in the city dropped to minus 25.4 degrees, while the night temperature in Sarhadabad dropped below minus 27 degrees.

This winter was the city's second coldest on record, beating the records of 1969 and 2008. Winter was colder only in 1905 - minus 33.8 degrees of frost was recorded.

The minimum temperature in Ashgabat on Friday was minus 16.4 degrees. This is a record minimum temperature for the capital of Turkmenistan.
