Energy Minister highlights Azerbaijan's commitment to clean environment and green growth

The concepts of "clean environment" and "green growth" have been established as key development priorities for Azerbaijan through the year 2030, with the country actively pursuing all planned initiatives, Azerbaijani Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov said during the Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW 2024).

"Azerbaijan is implementing a transition to green energy at national, regional, and global levels, accompanied by targeted reforms," he said.

He pointed out that the first phase is set to boost the slice of renewable energy sources in production capacities by a whopping 33 percent by 2027. This phase is all about tightening the screws on the energy system, carving out green energy zones, cleaning up the act in oil and gas operations, boosting energy efficiency, and putting the pedal to the metal on electric mobility.

"With the commissioning of the first solar power station based on foreign investments with a capacity of 230 MW, the production of solar electricity in 8 months of the current year has increased by more than 9 times. This is a great success in the implementation of the green strategy," Shahbazov noted.

The Minister indicated that by the time the year wraps up, the plan is to keep the ball rolling on the construction of two solar power plants boasting a combined capacity of 340 MW. Additionally, the results of the first auction for a 100 MW plant will be in the spotlight.

"In total, 8 solar and wind power plants with a capacity of about 2 GW, as well as 32 small hydroelectric power plants with a capacity of 270 MW in the liberated territories, allow to reduce emissions to 2.9 million tons per year by 2027," Shahbazov added.
