The United States and the European Union will implement additional coordinated measures to impose costs on Russia, should it fail to to take steps to deescalate the situation in eastern Ukraine, according to a White House statement Tuesday, SIA reports quoting the A nadolu Agency.
In the statement, after a phone call between U.S. President Barack Obama and his British counterpart David Cameron, they agreed on urging Russia to stop the flow of weapons and militants across the Ukrainian border.
The phone call took place after a Ukrainian helicopter was downed by the pro-Russian separatists on Tuesday leaving nine Ukrainian security officers dead.
Welcoming the ceasefire which was declared unilaterally by Ukrainian President Poroshenko, the two leaders called for Russia to use its influence over separatist groups to encourage them to take immediate concrete steps to implement President Poroshenko’s peace plan.
Ukrainian President Poroshenko declared a week-long unilateral ceasefire last Saturday in order to give diplomats a chance to end clashes between the Kiev-controlled Ukrainian army and pro-Russian separatists in Donetsk and Luhansk regions to the east. The separatists said they would abide by the ceasefire until Friday but downing the Ukrainian helicopter brought about concerns on the triggering of armed conflict again.
Separatists declared their intention to break away after the government in Kiev was overthrown by pro-West demonstrators in February.
