A new battery technology could put an end to smartphones charging on bedside tables every night – by charging the gizmos from empty to full in just 30 seconds.
The new batteries are made of artificial molecules made using nanotechnology (manipulating matter on a tiny, molecular scale).
Maker StoreDot claims the batteries work like a ‘super-dense sponge’ which soaks up power.
The Tel Aviv company is backed by Roman Abramovich, and already has a working prototype which can absorb a full day’s power in half a minute.
The current prototype is too bulky for a mobile phone, but the company says it could have a working, slim battery on the market by 2016.
''These are new materials, they have never been developed before,''said Doron Myersdorf, the founder and chief executive of StoreDot.
Fast-charge phones would cost around £65 more than current models, Myersdorf says.
