Armenia`s ex-president prophesies Mubarak`s fate for Armenian President

The growing social discontent in Armenia will develop into a social outbreak, Serzh Sargsyan will inevitably share Hosni Mubarak`s fate, Chairman of the opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC), Armenia`s first president Levon Ter-Petrosyan stated at an ANC rally on February 18. According to him, the Armenian people do not live better than people in Kyrgyzstan, Egypt or Tunisia, and the incumbent Armenian authorities are not at all less authoritarian than their Egyptian and Tunisian counterparts.
A major part of Levon Ter-Petrosyan`s speech dealt with the worsening socio-economic situation in the country over the last three months. The ANC leader`s speech was focused on the "authorities` attacks against small and medium businesses," particularly increased customs duties, compulsory car insurance and ban on street trading.
The ANC leader stressed the importance of more frequent social protests, being critical of their organizers. "Their major blunder is their abstaining from political statements. They hope they will easier succeed. But it is only by making political demands than one can get anything," Ter-Petrosyan said.
