The European Foundation for Democracy and Human Rights issued a statement over a biased resolution adopted by the EP against Azerbaijan

The European Foundation for Democracy and Human Rights has issued a statement over a biased resolution adopted by The European Parliament against Azerbaijan, on September 09, 2015, SIA reports.

The statement reads:

The European Foundation for Democracy and Human Rights is seriously concerned about the dissatisfaction and regret expressed by the social and political circles, non-governmental organizations and civil society organizations regarding the resolution adopted by the European Parliament dated 09 September 2015, which is being considered as anti-Azerbaijani. The resolution adopted by the European Parliament that contains false information in allegations set forth was adopted by a vote of 365 in favor of it, 202 votes against and 72 abstentions. "Parliamentarians", who voted in favor of the resolution, called for a quick and unconditional release of human rights defenders, journalists and other civil society activists according to the principles of European Human Rights Court and stressed the importance of serious negotiations based on mutual respect to resolve the conflict between opposition forces. The resolution calls for the suspension of the negotiations within the Strategic Cooperation Agreement until the Azerbaijani government expresses its respect to universal human rights. In addition, there is a call for rethinking financial allocation to the massive projects undertaken in cooperation with the European Parliament Human Rights Commission and the civil society as well as within the framework of the European Neighbourhood Instrument, excluding those related to human relations. According to the information obtained from Baku office of the European Foundation for Democracy and Human Rights, the accepted act is prepared on the basis of false information in connection with the alleged claims, subjective and biased nature. The presentation of the resolution based on individual circumstances and generalization to cover the whole country confirms the flaws in methodology. The resolution mentions sending a delegation to deal with the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, but unfortunately it evokes a feeling of regret that there is no sentence mentioning the unresolved situation in the area lasting for more than 20 years and concerning the millions of Azerbaijani refugees and internally displaced persons, who have been deprived of basic human rights.

According to the research conducted by the staff of the European Foundation for Democracy and Human Rights, Azerbaijani government has always been open to constructive suggestions and recommendations regarding national interests. For this reason, any document containing an item, which aims to affect the internal affairs of independent and sovereign states as well as any form of pressure and insult are unacceptable. Such a demonstration of bias and double standards by the European Parliament in turn triggers a need to think seriously about the importance of cooperation with European organizations.

Such an unpredictable and incomprehensible step by the European Parliament, which is known as one of the fundamental pillars of democracy in Europe, affects values and the principles of justice not only pertaining to the region, but also concerning the world’s accepted values. The European Foundation for Democracy and Human Rights expresses strong protest against the resolution adopted by the European Parliament and urges European structures to abandon double standards against Azerbaijan and respect the international law.

We, The European Foundation for Democracy and Human Rights, do not accept the biased and non-objective resolution adopted by the European Parliament on 09 September 2015, and therefore invite the European community to protest against the policy of double standards. We believe the resolution adopted by the European Parliament, intervening in the internal affairs of independent and sovereign states and putting vigorous pressure on them is not acceptable. Otherwise, the threat will be posed to the peace and democracy in the international arena, and attitude towards international norms, principles as well as the image of developed countries will change.
