U.S. Congressman Dan Maffei has expressed solidarity with Azerbaijan in connection with the 23rd anniversary of the 20 January tragedy and paid tribute to the victims in the course of his speech at the meeting of the Congress.
According to the congressman, the 20 January marked the beginning of the end of Soviet power over Azerbaijan and the end of the occupation of the country.
"This period in Azerbaijan was called Black January, when the violence broke out in Baku in 19 and 20 January in 1990. During the conflict, the Soviet troops killed more than 100 protesters and wounded 700 Azerbaijani citizens demanding freedom," said Maffei.
He recalled that Azerbaijan gained its independence on 18 October 1991.
"In this regard, I call on the House of Representatives to join me, to mark the anniversary with our ally Azerbaijan the events of Black January 1990, an event that began with a tragedy, but ended with the birth of an independent nation and U.S. ally," concluded the congressman.
