Gazprom to double export of Azerbaijani gas
Gazprom and the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan have signed an agreement to double Gazprom's purchase of gas to 3bn cubic metres in 2012.

The chairman of the Gazprom board, Aleksey Miller, and SOCAR President Rovnag Abdullyaev signed the addendum to the current purchase and sale agreement for Azerbaijani gas at Krasnaya Polyana today. The ceremony was attended by Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev and his Azerbaijani counterpart, Ilham Aliyev.

Under the addendum, Gazprom will increase its purchase of Azerbaijani gas from 1.5bn cubic metres in 2011 to 3bn in 2012 and more again in 2013.

Miller and Abdullayev both praised the dynamically developing cooperation between their companies and said that strengthened cooperation between Gazprom and SOCAR met the strategic interests of both countries.

"This is the second successive year that we have doubled the purchase of Azerbaijani gas," Aleksey Miller said.

"The Russian-Azerbaijani energy partnership is developing at a good rate which is evidence of a mutual desire to increase the volume of hydrocarbon supplies in future too. The lack of an upper limit on the purchase of gas, geographical proximity, the presence of a well-functioning gas transport infrastructure and the lack of transit zones allow Azerbaijan to make very profitable exports of natural gas to Europe," the Gazprom chief said.
