Vienna, Austria’s grand and illustrious capital, has topped consulting firm Mercer’s List of cities offering the highest quality of life for the eighth year in a row.
Other world capitals like London, Paris, Tokyo and New York City didn’t even make the top 30 (we can all the blame the cost of living for that unsurprising revelation). The big winners? Germany, the Scandis, Canada, New Zealand and Australia came out on top.
The point of the survey is to help companies determine hardship allowances for international staff. Mercer takes things like political stability, healthcare, education, crime rates and quality of transport into account.
Vienna topped the list for its amazing cafe culture, museums, theatres and operas. Rents in comparison to other cities are very low, and of course, the city is is drop-dead gorgeous.
Switzerland’s Zurich, New Zealand’s Auckland, Germany’s Munich and Canada’s Vancouver followed Vienna in the top five most pleasant cities to live in.
