Western Christians celebrate Easter

Catholics and many Protestants celebrate Easter, the oldest Christian holiday.

SIA reports that Easter and its associated holidays are historically changing because they are not celebrated on a specific day in the Gregorian and Julian calendars. The date of Easter is determined by a lunar-solar calendar similar to the Jewish calendar.

In Western Christianity, based on the Gregorian calendar, Easter is celebrated on one of the Sundays between March 22 and April 25, about a week after the date of the astronomical full moon.

The holy resurrection of Christ for Catholics in 2022 falls on April 17. The next day, Easter Monday, is an official holiday in many Christian-majority countries.

Some Eastern Orthodox churches change the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar and celebrate Easter at the same time as Western churches. The last week before Easter, which is of great importance in the Christian tradition, is called Holy Week.

Many churches begin Easter after Holy Saturday. In some countries, Easter is celebrated for two days and the second day is called Easter Monday.
