Nearly 4,000 Azerbaijani state institution employees targeted in major cybersecurity breach in 2024
Last year, employees of a number of state institutions in Azerbaijan failed to comply with cyber hygiene rules, and as a result, a total of 134 employees of 32 state institutions fell victim to hacker attacks, the State Service for Special Communication and Information Security of the Republic of Azerbaijan told SİA.
In addition, citizens who do not comply with information security and personal cyber hygiene rules when using the Internet also fall victim to hacker attacks. The statistics of citizens who fell victim to hacker attacks and, in addition to the information on their personal computers, also lost their authentication (login, password) and personal data related to the electronic services of state institutions of which they were users, were registered by the SCIS. Thus, the total number of personal accounts related to state electronic services that were leaked to hackers from citizens during 2024 was 3,798.
The relevant state agencies were informed about the cases of infection detected by the State Anti-Virus Service during the reporting period, and necessary steps were taken to eliminate the consequences, and on-site inspection measures were carried out in a number of institutions.
In order to organize reliable protection against increasing cyber threats and strengthen personal cyber hygiene, the State Service recommends that state agencies connect to a centralized antivirus system, and that citizens use antiviruses individually, including not clicking on suspicious links sent to protect against cyber attacks, and that information about fake domains be sent to the “blacklist.gov.az” platform.
