National Assembly member: ‘France’s true face is not what it seems at all’

The murder of a 17-year-old guy by the French police was the last straw in people’s patience, but the reasons for the protests have much deeper roots, Deputy of the National Assembly of the French Republic (French Guiana) Jean-Victor Castor said at a press conference following the event “Towards the Complete Elimination of Colonialism” in Baku.

There are various reasons behind the latest unrest in France: pension reform, poverty and unemployment, the murder of a guy was the last straw. In addition, discrimination is a very big problem in France today. Even the next generation of migrants born in this country continues to face discrimination, he noted.

He added that he himself had encountered this many times. “People are often stopped on the street for no reason and their documents are checked, which is also a kind of discrimination,” he said.

Journalists in France also often come under pressure, he noted. That is, France simply positions itself as a country with freedom of speech, but in fact it is not, he added.

“French realities are completely different, what is on the surface is not the true face of France at all,” said Jean-Victor Castor.
