Increase in Desertion-Related Criminal Cases in Russia's Military

The number of criminal cases related to desertion from the military is on the rise in Russia.

According to a report by Mediazona, an analysis of court statistics highlights this growing trend, SIA reports.

Data from the courts indicate that, by the end of July, more cases of desertion had been opened compared to the entire previous year. From the beginning of 2024 to the present, 5,204 cases related to unauthorized departure from military units have been filed in courts, surpassing the total of 5,096 such cases for all of 2023.

The ratio of new cases has more than doubled in 2024, with the number reaching 2,396 by the end of July 2023.

Investigators have noted that the number of new cases involving refusals to appear in court continues to rise each month. In May 2024 alone, the monthly figure approached 1,000 incidents, comprising 966 events, including 879 unauthorized departures, 45 instances of failure to comply with orders, and 42 cases of desertion.

Russian military courts issue approximately 800 rulings on these types of charges each month.

Mediazona previously reported that since 2022, Russian military courts have received over 10,000 (10,025) criminal cases related to refusals of service. While military courts were handling more than 200 such cases per month across the country in 2022, this number significantly increased in 2023.
