Meta's chief operating officer has resigned

Cheryl Sandberg has decided to leave her parent company Meta after working for Facebook for 14 years. Sandberg was the company's chief operating officer.

Sandberg, 52, has been the company's "second person" since 2008, after Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg. Sandberg has been instrumental in making the social media startup one of the most prominent companies in the technology industry.

She announced her decision to Zuckerberg last weekend. She said that despite the resignation of the chief operating officer, she will remain on the board of Meta, which controls Instagram and WhatsApp.

Sandberg said it's an honor to sit next to Mark for 14 years. Sandberg is known for bringing billions to the company through advertising and improving Facebook's relationship with the public and regulators. She is also best known for her 2013 book, Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead.

Sandberg said it would allow her to step down and focus more on her family. Sandberg said she remarried this summer, seven years after the unexpected death of her first husband, Dave Goldberg.

Zuckerberg thanked Sandberg and said that Java Oliva, Meta's current chief growth officer, will take over as the company's chief operating officer in the fall.
