Zelenskyy: Klymenko remains candidate for Minister of Defense position

Ihor Klymenko is considered one of the candidates for the position of Minister of Defense, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said, SİA informs via Interfax-Ukraine

"As for Klymenko, he is considered one of the candidates, but I have not yet submitted the relevant documents to parliament," Zelenskyy said during a press conference with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, in Kyiv on Thursday.

He also stated that he would like to see "unity between the Armed Forces of Ukraine leadership and the Ministry of Defense," noting that currently certain issues have to be resolved with his involvement, as the leadership of these agencies "do not sit down at the negotiating table without him."

"A wartime president should not have to choose in such a situation. Honestly. I would very much like unity. The sides have not found it, and this is a problem not only of the sides, but also mine," Zelenskyy said.

The Ukrainian leader also noted that Mykhailo Fedorov, who had headed Ukraine's Ministry of Defense since January 2026, would remain on the presidential team. However, he did not specify in what capacity.

"I am confident that Mykhailo [Fedorov] will remain on the team. We will discuss a little later what that will look like."

Speaking at his own briefing, the former head of the Ministry of Defense said that Volodymyr Zelenskyy offered him to stay on the team, in particular, offering him the position of advisor.

"Yesterday, a conversation took place with the president. He offered the position of an advisor or to find some other way to remain on the team. I declined the position of advisor. I never had the goal of becoming a minister, remaining a minister, seeking positions for myself, and so on," Mykhailo Fedorov emphasized.

Protests against the dismissal of Mykhailo Fedorov from the post of Minister of Defense are currently taking place in various cities across Ukraine. Commenting on these protests, Zelenskyy stated that citizens have the right to express their position even under martial law conditions, and assured that the Ukrainian authorities listen to society and respond to its demands.

On July 14, 2026, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine dismissed Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko. Since, according to Ukrainian legislation, the resignation of the prime minister automatically entails the resignation of the entire cabinet of ministers, the government resigned in full.
