Witness of Armenian origin: Vardanyan sponsored mercenary groups consisting of people aged 45-50

A witness testified at the review session of the criminal case against Ruben Vardanyan, an Armenian citizen accused of crimes against peace and humanity, war crimes, as well as terrorism, financing terrorism and other serious crimes under the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.

Report informs that the witness, an Armenian living in Karabakh, stated that Ruben Vardanyan arrived in Khankandi sometime after the 44-day war and said: "I don't know whether he came from Russia or from somewhere else."

The witness said that Vardanyan sponsored and financed groups of people aged 45-50 to fight against Azerbaijan. “A lot of young people went and signed up for those groups. What was interesting to me was why the world-famous businessman, oligarch Ruben Vardanyan, - I’m not saying he’s my enemy, no - left his business and came to Karabakh?”

The witness said that people joined the group for $700-$2000 and were recruited for military training.

Later, the witness’s statement during the preliminary investigation at the State Security Service was voiced. The witness confirmed their statement during the preliminary investigation.

The trial will continue after a recess.
