Envoy: Lithuania, Azerbaijan mull holding next meeting of intergovernmental commission

The new Lithuanian government is discussing with Azerbaijan the organization of the next meeting of the bilateral intergovernmental commission, Lithuanian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Kestutis Vaskelevicius told Report.

"The Intergovernmental Commission on bilateral cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Republic of Lithuania is an important body that gives an impetus for strengthening our relations and broadening our bilateral agenda. As Lithuania has just recently formed a new Government, the discussions about the planning of the Intergovernmental Commission meeting are starting. The last Intergovernmental Commission took place in Vilnius in 2023," he noted.

"The visit of Lithuanian President to Azerbaijan or Azerbaijani President’s visit to Lithuania would undoubtedly strengthen our bilateral relations. While we are building up bilateral agenda that would allow the visit of Lithuanian President to Azerbaijan, there are no plans for such a visit in the immediate future.

The Presidents of our countries H.E. Gitanas Nausėda and H.E. Ilham Aliyev spoke by telephone on December 30, 2024. The call was initiated by the President of Lithuania to convey his and Lithuanian people’s condolences for President Aliyev and to Azerbaijani people following the AZAL plane crash. In his call, the Lithuanian President expressed his solidarity with Azerbaijan during those difficult days in the aftermath of the crash, and stressed the need for a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances of the crash.... During the call both Presidents also discussed Lithuania- Azerbaijan relations. President Nausėda highlighted that Lithuania will continue to foster and strengthen friendly, warm and open bilateral relations with Azerbaijan," he added.
