Azerbaijan Strengthens Ties with UN

Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of the Milli Majlis, met with Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, during a working visit to Geneva.

The meeting took place at the Azerbaijan Room within the UN Office in Geneva and highlighted the close cooperation between Azerbaijan and the UN.

Tatiana Valovaya praised the Heydar Aliyev Foundation for its diverse activities, including its active participation in UN projects. During the meeting, Speaker Gafarova briefed Valovaya on the upcoming 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which is scheduled to take place in Baku this November. The event's hosting in Azerbaijan signifies recognition of the country's efforts in combating climate change.

Gafarova also provided insight into a forthcoming parliamentary session, which will be jointly organized by the Milli Majlis and the Inter-Parliamentary Union as part of COP29. The Speaker highlighted the international activities of Azerbaijan's Parliament, emphasizing its role in promoting global cooperation.

Tatiana Valovaya described Azerbaijan as a key partner for the UN in various domains, praising the country's hosting of COP29 and acknowledging its significant progress in green energy. During the meeting, the pair engaged in a broad exchange of views on various issues.

Following the meeting, the Azerbaijani parliamentary delegation visited the monument "Thoughts and Desires," which was donated by the Azerbaijani government to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the country's accession to the United Nations. The monument is located in Ariana Park, opposite the Palace of Nations at the UN Office in Geneva.
