Analysis: Zangazur corridor to simplify Central Asia's access to European markets
The opening of the Zangazur Corridor will provide significant advantages for countries along its route, Report writes, citing an analytical material prepared as part of a project by Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Transport.
According to the document, one of the key solutions to reduce the load on the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) route is the launch of the Zangazur Corridor — a 43-kilometer railway section connecting Azerbaijan’s mainland with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
"The corridor will shorten the route from Azerbaijan to Türkiye. Under the current BTK route, freight trains travel about 250 km through Georgia. The new route is much shorter: after the completion of the railway up to the Azerbaijani border village of Aghband, the distance between Azerbaijan and Türkiye will decrease by 343 km. This will save time and costs, reducing delivery times by about one day compared to the route through Georgia," the report notes.
The document emphasizes that the launch of the Zangazur Corridor will not diminish the significance of the BTK route — both directions will complement each other, enhancing the region’s transit potential.
The study’s authors believe that all countries involved in the Asia-Europe transport and logistics chain will benefit from the corridor. The new route will facilitate Asian countries’ access to European markets via land, expand the region’s logistics capabilities, and boost demand for transit services.
For Central Asian countries, the Zangazur initiative is seen as a strategic tool for reaching markets in Türkiye, Romania, and Bulgaria through Azerbaijan.
The document stresses that Azerbaijan's current priority is to ensure the full-scale operation of the Zangazur Corridor. The project could benefit the entire region, including Armenia. In addition to establishing direct rail links between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the corridor will connect Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Iran through the Julfa hub in Nakhchivan, which operated during the Soviet era.
Furthermore, the Kars-Gyumri-Nakhchivan-Meghri-Baku route will open direct railway communication between Türkiye and regional countries, giving an additional boost to interregional cooperation, the document highlights.
