BIG, foreign researchers investigate riots, repressions in New Caledonia

The Baku Initiative Group (BIG), along with foreign researchers, has prepared a research paper titled "New Caledonia: Colonial Heritage, Struggle for Self-determination and the Crisis of 2024," SİA informs, citing the BIG.

The research reflects the May 2024 riots in New Caledonia, their causes, the course of events, as well as repressions against the Kanak people and international reactions and results of the struggle in this regard.

It was noted that the research paper, written between March and June of this year, covers the chronology of events, the scale of violence and destruction, the atrocities committed by French law enforcement agencies, as well as the reactions of countries with interests in the region and the region itself, as well as the UN.

The research shows that colonial governance is at the root of the Kanak people's protests and analyzes serious deficiencies regarding the fundamental rights of peoples living under subjugation:

"Several key conclusions emerge from this research, reflecting both local specificity and the broader political context. Thus, the 2024 crisis in New Caledonia showed that France's attempts to maintain control over the territory through force and administrative methods—without respecting the local people's right to self-determination—only exacerbate the conflict. Also, the metropole's response in the form of repression, state of emergency, and arrests demonstrated its unreadiness for dialogue and that colonial reflexes are still strong. The research analyzes the issue of Caledonia's status from the perspective of international law, showing it is not France's internal affair, and concludes that lasting peace is impossible without a settlement based on justice."

It was also stated that the agreement signed on July 12 between France and New Caledonia proves that the results of the aforementioned research were accurately predicted: The Kanak people should decide the status of the island, and New Caledonia should gradually become fully independent.
