Azerbaijan and Iran have held discussions on the ongoing development of construction work at the Astara Terminal located in Iran.
Citing Azerbaijan Railways CJSC (ADY), the talks took place during a meeting between ADY Chairman Rovshan Rustamov and Jabbar Ali Zakeri, head of the Iranian Railways, held at the Astara Terminal.
The meeting focused on the key phases and timelines for the terminal’s development, with both sides reviewing the construction work expected to be completed by the end of this year.
It was noted that substantial progress has been made on the terminal, which is a vital component of the North-South International Transport Corridor. About 90% of the design work and approximately 75% of the construction and installation have been completed. A Strategic Cooperation Plan signed in early 2025 between ADY and Iranian Railways regarding the implementation of the terminal’s construction and operation agreement is expected to accelerate the project’s completion.
The Astara Terminal is set to enhance cargo volume and ensure efficient operations along the North-South transport route.
Construction of the terminal began in 2017 based on an agreement between the Azerbaijani and Iranian governments. The facility is being built by ADY on land leased from the Iranian government for a 25-year period.
In 2023, the terminal handled 692,000 tons of cargo, increasing to over 777,000 tons in 2024. Once completed, the terminal's annual handling capacity is expected to reach 3.5 million tons.
