IPU President: Every 11th person suffers from hunger

The large number of people present at the international COP29 conference demonstrates the global community's commitment to fighting climate change consequences, Tanzanian MP and Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) President Tulia Ackson said during her speech at the COP29 parliamentary meeting.

"The parliamentarians present here express gratitude to Azerbaijan for the high-level organization of COP29 and commitment to finding solutions in the fight against climate change," she said.

Ackson emphasized that climate change is one of the main contemporary challenges, as its negative consequences affect all aspects of people's lives. According to her, since the adoption of the Paris Agreement, the IPU has been supporting climate initiatives, including legislative ones.

"Climate changes affect the lives of many people, therefore parties need to urgently take measures to combat climate change consequences. At COP29, we must acknowledge that approximately 733 million people, or every 11th person on the planet, currently suffer from hunger, and climate changes only exacerbate this crisis," she said.

Ackson called for turning ambitions into real actions and uniting in the fight against the climate crisis. Only in this case can we achieve success, she said.
