COP29 president-designate: Azerbaijan understands that it must set an example in climate action

Azerbaijan understands that it must set an example in climate action, and related measures will become a central part of the national development plan, the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, President-Designate of COP29, Mukhtar Babayev, said today at the 15th Petersberg Climate Dialogue held in Berlin, SİA informs.

According to him, Azerbaijan is striving to limit global warming to 1.5°C. "However, even if we reduce emissions, everyone still needs to adapt to a planet with rising temperatures. Next year, we must all develop national adaptation plans so that we can make rapid progress towards achieving them by 2030. These plans will define how we share best practices and technologies and support each other's efforts."

Babayev noted that one of the important issues is the negative effects of climate change on agriculture: "Agricultural productivity is declining, making it difficult to feed a growing planet. More than a third of the labor force in Azerbaijan works in agriculture. We are now facing the risk of water scarcity and land degradation. About 4 billion people in the world face these problems. In the past year, many countries have committed to transforming their food systems. This is necessary to protect farmers and food systems from the negative effects of global warming."
