Myanmar Bans Overseas Employment for Military Service Age Individuals
Nyunt Vin, an advisor to the Myanmar Ministry of Labor, announced that individuals of military service age are now prohibited from traveling abroad for work purposes in Myanmar, effective May 1, SIA reports.
Those who already held work permits abroad before May 1 are exempt from this restriction. The lifting of the ban will be contingent upon certain conditions.
Vin clarified, "Starting from May 1, only women will be permitted to go abroad as migrant workers."
This decision stems from a surge in young people attempting to go abroad for work to avoid compliance with the newly announced "Compulsory Military Service Law" declared on February 10. Under this law, individuals aged between 18 and 35, as well as women aged between 18 and 27, are mandated to serve in the military for a minimum of 2 years. Additionally, the military will recruit 5,000 individuals monthly.
Recall that following allegations of electoral fraud in Myanmar's 2020 parliamentary elections, the military seized power on February 1, 2021. This led to the detention of numerous officials and leaders of the ruling party, including de facto leader and foreign minister Aung San Suu Kyi, and the declaration of a state of emergency.
Democracy advocates have been protesting against military rule, resulting in numerous casualties as soldiers opened fire on demonstrators.
Under the banner of the Three Brotherhood Alliance, armed groups such as the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army, the Arakan Army, and the Ta'ang National Liberation Army launched attacks against the Myanmar military near the Chinese border in Shan state on October 27, 2024.
