President Ilham Aliyev approves legislative amendments concerning religious activity
President Ilham Aliyev has approved legislative amendments concerning religious activity.

The president on Monday signed decisions on amendments to the Administrative Offences Code and to the Criminal Code and a decree on the implementation of Law No 238-IVQD on "Making amendments to the Administrative Offences Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan".

The amendments were passed by the Azerbaijani parliament on 15 November, SIA reports.

Under the amendments, the following activities are deemed contrary to legislation on religious belief, specifically: sending students abroad to obtain religious education without first agreeing this with the relevant executive bodies; the exchange of clerics; the conduct of Islamic rituals by clerics who studied abroad; and the conduct of religious propaganda by foreigners and stateless persons.

Religious propaganda by foreigners and stateless persons conducted by spreading illegal religious literature, items and other informative religious material becomes a criminal offence and offenders will be held responsible under the Criminal Code.

The president's decree instructs the Cabinet of Ministers to resolve issues arising from the legislative amendments within three months.
