Will Smith’s new comedy "Focus" opened as the top film in U.S. and Canadian cinemas, toppling the steamy drama "Fifty Shades of Grey" after two weekends as No. 1.
Smith’s R-rated Warner Bros. feature with Margot Robbie produced $19.1 million in its debut, Rentrak Corp. said Sunday in a statement. "Fifty Shades," with $10.9 million in sales, fell to No. 4. "The Lazarus Effect" opened with $10.6 million in sales to place fifth.
The first R-rated movie led by Smith in more than a decade, the opening at No. 1 is a reminder of the former rapper’s pull at the box office. Competition at the box office heats up later this month when Walt Disney Co. releases "Cinderella" on March 13.
