Russia and Iran have agreed to sign an agreement on a free trade area (FTA) with the EAEU in the near future, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said at a press conference following a meeting of the Russian-Iranian intergovernmental commission, SIA reports, citing foreign media.
According to Novak, Russian and Iranian companies already have agreements on joint projects in the field of machine-building, automobile and aircraft production.
Noting that the trade between the countries increased by 36.4 percent to 3.3 billion dollars during the eight months of 2022 and is already approaching 4 billion dollars, Novak said: "There are already agreements on joint projects, the organization of necessary joint ventures between Russian and Iranian companies and the supply of relevant components."
Cooperation between Russia and Iran intensified after Russia's large-scale intervention in Ukraine. During the war, as declared by Ukraine and Western countries, Russia used, among others, Iranian-made Shahed-136 kamikaze drones during mass attacks on Ukrainian cities on October 10-11. But Iran and Russia have repeatedly denied information about the supply of drones.
On October 20, the European Union and Great Britain imposed sanctions on Shahed Aviation Industries, the maker of kamikaze drones, and three Iranian military officials.
According to the "Washington Post", Iran has also secretly agreed to transfer "Fateh-110" and "Zulfaga" short-range "surface-to-surface" ballistic missiles to Russia.
Meanwhile, "Foreign Policy" claimed that Russia recruited members of the elite commando corps of the Afghan National Army, which remained in the country after the Taliban seized power last year, to fight against Ukraine.
Interestingly, the American publication sees Iran as the executor of this issue. According to the publication, new conscripts are being taken from Afghanistan to Iran, and from there to Russia.
