US called on leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia to meet in whatever format is most useful to them

"The United States is committed to the Armenian-Azerbaijani peace talks," said Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State Vedant Patel at the briefing, SİA reports.

He emphasized that the US has encouraged both leaders to meet in whatever format is most useful to them. "Our viewpoint is that direct dialogue is key to resolving these issues and reaching a lasting peace," Patel added.

He noted that there is no greater supporter than the U.S. for the sovereignty and independence of the three countries in the South Caucasus.

Patel said restoration of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia’s independence in 1991 when the Soviet Union was a seminal event that guaranteed each of these countries the right to pursue their own foreign policy interests and sovereignty.

At the briefing, Patel was also asked about the mines placed by Armenia on the territory of Azerbaijan. The reporter reminded that 262 people lost their lives as a result of the explosion of these mines, and eight months ago, State Department announced 2 million dollars of funding to solve problems related to mines. He asked if that funding is still available and allocated, and if so, what is going on with that program.

"My understanding is that it is, but I will check – we can get you specifics and follow up with you afterward," Patel answered.

Notably, a tripartite meeting of the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia is expected in Sochi on October 31.
