Rada recognizes Chechnya as temporarily occupied territory

The Verkhovna Rada has recognized the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria as temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation. 287 parliamentarians voted for the adoption of draft resolution No. 8132 as a whole with the minimum required 226, SIA reports, citing Ukrainian News Agency.

The document states that Russia committed genocide against the Chechen population, condemning this act. 287 out of 351 deputies voted in favor of the resolution, while 64 deputies abstained.

According to foreign media, the document states that Chechnya left the USSR in 1991 and declared its independence under the name of Ichkeria. The document says that Russia prevented this, contrary to the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples established in the UN Charter.

The Russian military is accused of twice invading Ichkeria, using weapons prohibited by international conventions in Chechnya, and killing thousands of representatives of the Chechen people. It is alleged that Russian troops took hostages at a school in Beslan, resulting in the death of more than 300 representatives of the Chechen people.

The resolution adopted by the Rada emphasizes that the adoption of the document supports the independence aspirations of the Chechen people of Ukraine.

"In addition, the condemnation of international crimes committed by Moscow against the Chechen people, including genocide, will contribute to the restoration of historical justice, and the call for an independent violation will punish the perpetrators."

In his statement to "Kavkaz.Realii", the former minister of Ichkeria government and the prime minister of the government in exile, Ahmet Zakayev, called the vote of the Rada a historical document for Chechens and all "nations oppressed by the Kremlin". Today the independence of Ichkeria has not been recognized by any country in the world.
