The Latvian Orthodox Church separates from the Russian Orthodox Church
Latvia has adopted a law on the independence of the Latvian Orthodox Church (LPK) from the Russian Orthodox Church.
The bill will therefore prevent the Moscow Patriarchate from influencing the Latvian Church.
SIA reports with reference to "Kommersant" that the law presented by the country's president Egils Levits was urgently implemented. Meanwhile, according to Human Rights and Public Relations Commission Chairman Artus Kaimins, the separation of the Latvian Orthodox Church from the Moscow Patriarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church will benefit both the Orthodox and the entire society, as well as the national security.
Earlier the professor of the Moscow Theological Academy, Protococh Vladislav Tsypin stated that the issue of the status of the LOK is within the exclusive jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church.
In his opinion, the initiative of the President of Latvia to recognize the independence of the LPTs from the Moscow Patriarchate is illegal.
