Swedish FM: "We will eliminate Turkiye's concerns"

Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström said that with the amendment of the constitution, it will be considered a crime to promote terrorist activities, to carry out propaganda and to use their flags, SIA refers to foreign media.

Billström evaluated the steps his country will take within the framework of the tripartite memorandum with Turkiye, Sweden and Finland.

Billström said, "The agreement signed between Turkiye, Sweden and Finland in Madrid was the first step. We want to further expand cooperation in all fields with the country becoming a member of NATO."

Billström said that the constitutional amendment on terrorism in Sweden will come into force on January 1:

"By amending the article of the constitution, we consider it a crime to join, support or strengthen a terrorist organization. With the bill we will present to the parliament on March 7, we will create a new crime in the Swedish Criminal Code. It will be considered a crime to promote terrorist activities and wave their flags on our lands."

Billström pointed out that the changes made to the constitution and laws will eliminate many of Turkiye's concerns about terrorism, saying that Turkiye has concerns about terrorist financing. There are concerns that people are using Swedish territory to gather support for terrorist organizations such as the PKK. These changes will make things even more difficult. That's why we are enforcing these laws."

Turkiye vetoes Finland and Sweden, which applied for membership at the NATO summit held in Madrid, the capital of Spain, on June 28. Having signed a protocol with two countries that openly support terrorist organizations, Ankara expects the promises made to be fulfilled.
