The General Directorate of Maritime Affairs of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure said that 8 out of 24 crude oil tankers passed through the Bosphorus, submitting a letter confirming that the P&I insurance containing the requested information is valid, SIA reports, citing Turkish media.

The General Directorate of Maritime Affairs of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Turkey posted a statement on social networks about the passage of ships with crude oil through the Turkish Straits by presenting a letter of confirmation.

The statement states that the tankers that have passed the necessary procedures were allowed to pass.

“After December 1, 8 out of 24 crude oil tankers that wanted to cross the Turkish Straits from the Black Sea completed their passage through the Bosphorus, presenting a letter confirming that the P&I insurance containing the information we requested was valid. Currently, 4 more crude oil tankers are included in the Istanbul Strait passage plan. They provided an appropriate confirmation letter. They are expected to pass through the Bosphorus tomorrow,” the statement said.

The remaining 12 crude oil tankers have not yet submitted a confirmation letter and are still waiting. The amount of crude oil on board is 1.8 million tons.

The statement also notes that the passage of 4 tankers with 475,000 tons of crude oil is scheduled for tomorrow.

“9 out of 12 crude oil tankers that did not submit a proper letter of confirmation go to the ports of the European Union countries. 8 of these ships belong to Greece, 3 to Hong Kong. P&L insurance for these vessels is provided by British companies that are members of the International P&I Group. 5 out of 8 tankers without a letter of confirmation were expelled from the territorial waters of Turkey. 4 tankers, after providing the proper documents, followed in the direction of the Aegean Sea. At the moment, only one tanker is waiting for passage. The passage of two ships is planned for Monday.”

According to the report, the only Russian tanker with crude oil has provided the corresponding confirmation letter and will pass through the Bosphorus in a southerly direction tomorrow.
