IAEA to send expert missions to Ukraine’s three active nuclear power plants
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will send expert missions to the Rovno, Khmelnitsky and South Ukraine nuclear power plants following a request from the Kiev authorities, the IAEA said in a statement.
"The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will in the coming weeks send nuclear safety and security missions to three operating nuclear power plants in Ukraine, as well as to the country’s Chernobyl site," the statement said, citing IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
The IAEA chief stressed that "initially, each mission will last for about a week." According to the statement, the IAEA will "send its third such expert mission to Chernobyl during the current conflict in Ukraine."
According to the document, the IAEA "has been doing everything it can to prevent a nuclear accident with potentially serious consequences for public health and the environment" since the start of the conflict.
"We have delivered nuclear safety and security equipment, produced impartial assessments of the situation, and provided technical expertise and advice. We are doing this important work in close cooperation with - and at the request of - the Ukrainian authorities," Grossi pointed out. "Immediately after I received this latest request from Ukraine, we developed concrete proposals and began preparing the technical and logistical details and we are now ready to deploy these new missions soon," he added.
Grossi said earlier in an interview with the Indian Express that the IAEA was providing assistance to the Rovno, Khmelnitsky and South Ukraine nuclear power plants based on the Ukrainian government’s request. According to him, the facilities are "as safe as they can be in a war.".
