Beaches around the world are facing an existential threat from coastal erosion, which is difficult to stop due to sand washing away, SİA informs referring to The Financial Times.
From Miami to Barcelona and Australia's Gold Coast, authorities are trying to figure out how to save coastlines from erosion in the coming years. Some of the erosion occurs due to natural causes. The situation is exacerbated by storms, strong tides and rising sea levels due to anthropogenic global warming, which leads to the melting of glaciers, the publication notes.
Sand is artificially imported to restore the coastline. It serves as a natural defense against flooding. However, the price of sand is rising, and supply is shrinking due to high demand in the construction and other industries. In the American city of Rodanthe, 11 houses have collapsed into the ocean due to coastal erosion since 2020.
Local authorities believe that it will take more than $40 million to restore the beaches - the city does not have such funds. Barcelona's coastline is losing 30,000 cubic meters of sand a year, the equivalent of 12 Olympic swimming pools, the newspaper says. Despite anti-erosion measures, some beaches could disappear completely, the newspaper writes.
