Yerevan not to help in getting Turkish representative elected OSCE Secretary General

Official Ankara has repeatedly asked Yerevan for support in getting a Turkish representative elected OSCE Secretary General but was refused. A source said such assistance is rendered to friendly states, while Armenia and Turkey are far from being friendly.

The Turkish media reported President Abdullah Gul plans to ask his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sargsyan for help in getting a Turkish representative elected OSCE Secretary General, adding it will meet Armenia’s interests.

President Abdullah Gul addressed a letter to the Armenian leader, asking him to vote for the Turkish representative. The Turkish candidate for the post Ersin Ercin is expected to bring the letter to Armenia next month. The envoy himself pointed out that the letter is the best gesture, and he will arrive in Yerevan as President Abdullah Gul’s special representative. In his letter the Turkish leader will point out Turkey will be neutral in the OSCE, and no Chief Secretary can be as neutral as a Turkish representative, the Turkish ambassador said.

Three other candidates lay claims to the post of the OSCE Chief Secretary: the former foreign minister of Austria Ursula Plassnik, Joao Suares and Lamberto Dzanier (Italy).
