The chief of the international relations department of the Presidential Administration, Novruz Mammadov has given an interview to portal Newtimes.az.
Asked about the statement of US Representative Howard Berman about Ramil Safarov, the official said that Congressman Berman for the first time makes statement of this kind.
"It is well known that the congressman builds its activities thanks to funding from the Armenian community and, therefore, is making such statements under their dictation. Despite the fact that he is a member of the House of Representatives, he completely ignored interests of the US and NATO," the PA official said.
According to him, it means that this legislator acts only on behalf of the Armenian lobby and diaspora, so it might be not the last statement of this kind.
"Mr. Berman is making such statements to gain the votes of Armenians, as in November the US will hold elections for the Congress, and he is trying to get ahead of his pro-Armenian opponent Brad Sherman and enlist the support of the Armenian diaspora in the debate, scheduled for 29 September. Because of this, the US interests are on the backburner."
Mammadov added that from the statement it is clear that Mr. Berman is ignorant of foreign policy.
"The desire of Berman is that the United States, in favor of the Armenians, ceased to cooperate with Azerbaijan in the military-technical sphere and within the NATO Partnership for Peace program. The congressman did not even know that the position on the Ramil Safarov's issue is already defined. He calls on his supporters in the North Atlantic alliance to protest against clemency of the Azerbaijani officer. He does not even know the essence of NATO's cooperation with Azerbaijan and what it means for the US and NATO to terminate cooperation with this country."
