His Halifax bomber was later reported as missing, while dropping arms and supplies to local resistance fighters.
More than a decade later, in 1960, local resident Jaho Cala found Mr Thompson's wedding ring on a mountain about 40km north of the capital, Tirana.
He kept the ring and hid it in his home, afraid to show it to the then-Communist authorities.
Before dying, he asked his son, Xhemil Cala, to look for the family of the owner, beginning a quest that ended with the ring being presented to the airman's 92-year-old sister, Dorothy Webster.
