US to supply Liberia with samples of experimental Ebola vaccine
The US White House Food and Drug Administration approved the Liberian request for sample doses of experimental vaccine against the Ebola virus disease, which recently swept across the Western African state, killing hundreds of people, the official website of Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf said in a statement.
According to the statement, the samples will be sent for treatment of Liberian doctors infected with the deadly disease. The experimental vaccine is expected to be delivered by a US representative later this week.
According to the recent World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, the death toll inflicted by the Ebola virus disease outbreak in West Africa since February reached 1,013 and the number of people infected totaled 1,848.
The largest number of deaths was reported in Guinea, where the outbreak of the virus was registered last December and claimed 373 lives. A total of 323 people were reported dead in neighboring Liberia and 315 in Sierra Leone.
Two deaths from Ebola were reported in Nigeria, which is the most densely populated state in Africa.
