Ethnic minorities can study in their native language in Azerbaijan-Minister

Conditions have been formed for ethnic minorities in Azerbaijan to get education in their native languages.

This work is conducted at a high level in the country, Minister of Education Misir Mardanov said at a meeting of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly’s Committee on social affairs, education, culture and civil society, held on Monday in Baku.

He noted that 100% of children were involved in secondary education up to ninth form in Azerbaijan.

"After the ninth form, 10% of these children continue their education at vocational schools."

Referring to the validity of diplomas of foreign universities, Mardanov said that Azerbaijan had an agreement with a range of countries such as Turkey, Iran, Russia, Ukraine, diplomas of which were recognized with the country. All other issues, he said, were determined in accordance with the Lisbon Convention, on an individual basis.

Answering to a question of Armenian MP Aram Safaryan about the possibility of cooperation between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the field of tolerance education of schoolchildren within the Euronest, Mardanov said: "It's a complicated issue. I do not know what is written in your books and you are not well aware of ours. There is a very difficult situation formed between our two countries and this issue should be addressed by experts."
