New EU sanctions against Russia include oil embargo, restrictions on banks, media

EU ambassadors at a meeting in Luxembourg on Thursday approved the sixth package of sanctions against Russia, which includes restrictions on companies in the oil and banking sectors, as well as on the work of the media, the French EU Presidency reported on Twitter.

In particular, the package contains a ban on the supply of Russian oil by sea, which together with the individual measures of Poland and Germany, will reduce purchases by 92% by the end of the year. This paragraph also provides for the possibility of introducing a ban on pipeline import of oil from the Russian Federation. The package also bans provision of services to Russian companies in the oil industry.

Three Russian banks, including Sberbank, and one Belarusian bank will be disconnected from the international payments system SWIFT.

In its new package the EU expanded restrictions on the supply of goods to Russia that will affect chemical and high-tech production. The packages envisages a ban on consulting services for Russian operators.

The package also includes a ban on three Russian media organizations involved in the dissemination of propaganda, but their names are not mentioned.

The EU imposed sanctions against members of the security and military leadership, including in connection with the events in Bucha, they will also affect industrial and technological enterprises associated with Russian aggression, oligarchs, propagandists and members of their families, the French presidency of the EU said.

The full list of individuals and entities affected by the new restrictions, as well as a detailed description of each measure, will be published in the Official Journal of the EU on Friday. Sanctions will take effect from the moment of publication.
