Syrians begin to return home from Turkey — Erdogan

Following the change of power in Syria, Syrian refugees who fled to Turkey have begun to return to their homeland, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.

"We provided shelter to 4.5 million Syrians. That number is now 3.7 million. I believe that the winds of change in Syria will bring about beneficial results for the entire Syrian people, especially migrants. As the situation in Syria stabilizes we hope more Syrians will voluntarily and safely return home. We are already seeing the first signs of this process," he said after a government meeting.

"From Monday, Turkey opened the Yayladagi checkpoint [on the border with Syria] to facilitate migrants’ movement and avoid traffic jams," he announced. "We will duly manage the voluntary return process with dignity. We will not let anyone mar this humanitarian process."
