The UN is aware of the tensions between Azerbaijan and Russia, Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric told Report.
On June 27, two Azerbaijani civilians, Ziyadin and Huseyn Safarov, were killed in the city of Yekaterinburg in the Sverdlovsk region of the Russian Federation, under torture by officers of the Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB). They were the brothers of the famous Azerbaijani journalist Seyfaddin Huseynli.
On the same day, during an FSB raid, several people were seriously injured, and nine people were detained.
In response to a question about why the UN has not yet officially condemned the incident and demanded an explanation from the Russian side, Dujarric said that the world organization is aware of what happened: "We are fully aware of the tensions between Azerbaijan and the Russian Federation that have arisen due to a number of incidents, including the one you refer to. We are closely monitoring the incidents that are occurring in both countries. We hope that all these issues will be resolved through diplomatic channels."
No additional information was provided on whether the UN has officially contacted Russia on this issue.
