Pashinyan says important to hold early elections for Catholicos of All Armenians

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has announced the need to hold early elections for the Catholicos of All Armenians, SİA informs referring to Armenian media.

"Early elections must definitely take place, but early elections for the Catholicos of All Armenians," he noted.

Since the end of May, Pashinyan has been making harsh statements against Garegin II and the archbishops of the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC), demanding that the Catholicos leave the throne due to information about violating the vow of celibacy. In late June, two archbishops of the AAC were arrested in Yerevan.

The head of the Shirak Diocese, Archbishop Mikael Ajapakhyan, is accused of calling for the seizure of power, and the leader of the Sacred Struggle protest movement, Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, is accused of planning terrorist actions and the seizure of power in Armenia. In addition to the archbishops, 15 more people were arrested.
