Indonesian President Joko Widodo has called on US President Joe Biden to 'do more to stop the atrocities occurring in Gaza'.
The US President Joe Biden hosted Indonesian President Joko Widodo at the White House as the two countries strengthen their relationship, one day before the US leader leaves for San Francisco to attend a summit of Asian leaders, SIA refers to foreign media.
The presidents shared an afternoon tea and met with top advisers, according to senior administration officials who insisted on anonymity to reveal the schedule.
Indonesia and the United States are formalizing a new strategic partnership as they move toward closer collaboration. Also on the agenda will be expanding the trade of critical minerals like nickel, which can be used to produce electric vehicle batteries.
He also urged Washington to pay more efforts to stop “atrocities” in Gaza.
Addressing the importance of the relationship between the two countries, Biden stated that they would elevate their bilateral relations to the level of comprehensive strategic partnership. Joko Widodo emphasized the significance of the relations between the two countries, saying, "Indonesia hopes that our partnership with the US will contribute to regional and global peace and prosperity. Therefore, Indonesia calls for more efforts from the US to stop the events in Gaza. A ceasefire is essential for humanity."
After their bilateral meeting, Joseph Biden and Joko Widodo issued a joint statement. The statement highlighted that the Indonesia-U.S. relationship has reached the level of a "comprehensive strategic partnership." It mentioned that within the framework of this partnership, collaboration would be strengthened in areas such as innovation, continuous development, public health, digital transformation, and clean energy.
The statement also indicated that collaboration in the defense sector between the two countries would be deepened.
