Almost 3,000 people dead in earthquake in Morocco

The most destructive earthquake in Morocco’s recent history struck on the night of 8 September, killing 2960 people.

"The number of people who died in the earthquake has increased to 2,960," Moroccan government spokesman Mustafa Baytaş said in a statement to the press after the cabinet meeting.

Current estimates are that almost 3,000 people have died and more than 5,600 others are injured. According to information obtained by SIA, the identification of destroyed houses is still ongoing.

The government will complete the count of affected homes in October.

"From this month, 2,500 dirhams ($250) will be given to every family affected by the earthquake for a year."

On the night of September 8, an earthquake of magnitude 7 occurred in Morocco with the epicenter in the Houz region. 2.8 million people, equal to two-thirds of the population, were affected by the earthquake, and the estimated number of destroyed houses is 60,000.
