Death toll in Kenya starvation cult case reaches 403

The death toll from the sect has risen to over 400 Good News International Church, founded by the Kenyan pastor Paul Mackenzie, which promotes prolonged fasting as a tool ”to meet Jesus Christ“.

SIA reports that this was reported by the local press, according to which 12 other bodies were found, thus bringing the total number of dead to 403.

Police believe most of the bodies found in a forest near the town of Malindi belong to followers of Mackenzie, a taxi driver turned preacher accused of inciting them to starve "to meet Jesus".

Last month, prosecutors also asked to detain the 65 survivors of the sect to undergo psychological and medical tests, after they refused to eat the meals given to them in the relief center that sheltered them.

In Kenya, taking one's life is considered a criminal offense under the laws introduced by the British colonizers. The 65 survivors are followers of pastor Mackenzie, who according to what emerged from the investigation convinced his faithful to fast until death to "go to heaven".

The bodies were found in mass graves located in the vast Shakahola forest in southeastern Kenya.
