Police clash with protesters in Turkmenistan over subsidized products
At the end of last week, protests have been held in two farmers' associations against the non-sale of subsidized products for several months in the Kunya-Urgench etrap of the Dashoguz province, Turkmenistan.
The "Chronicle of Turkmenistan" publication writes that more than 100 local residents participated in the protests, SIA reports.
There was reportedly a conflict between the protesters and the police officers who arrived at the scene and around 15 people were detained.
The representatives of the local authorities could not disperse the protesters and the situation began to escalate.
About two hours later, "Zaman" reported that about 180 local residents blocked the road to Kunya-Urgench with the same demands. As a result, a large number of cars and trucks, as well as tractors, were piled up on both sides of the road.
Although the police team and the traffic police from the protest center came to the place of the action, they could not persuade the people to disperse.
"We have nothing to feed the children! We have no money to buy flour from private traders. Give us the fixed quota of flour and oil," Chronicle Turkmenistan quoted the protestors as saying.
During the clash, a police officer tried to move the protesters out of the way, but the collar of the policeman's shirt was torn.
As a result of the intervention of local elders, serious conflicts were prevented. But the protesters are still on the road. About 15 people were detained after the police clashed with the protesters.
Their further fate is not reported.
Due to the ongoing economic crisis and declining living standards in Turkmenistan, a large part of the population depends on subsidized products distributed at discounted prices through government stores. But the local authorities cannot keep up with the demands of the people.
