Japanese prime minister could travel to Ukraine in mid-February – report

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida could visit Ukraine in the middle of next month and hold talks in Kiev with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported on Sunday, citing sources.

The Japanese prime minister, according to the report, also plans to tour Ukrainian regions that were the scene of earlier hostilities. It’s expected that the trip, if it happens, will end with a joint statement where Kishida and the Ukrainian government will condemn Russia's actions, the newspaper wrote.

The Yomiuri said a visit to Ukraine would be important for Kishida in connection with Japan's presidency in the Group of Seven this year. The trip could demonstrate Tokyo's active involvement in the process of assisting Kiev, the report said.

Japan is still considering how to ensure security during the trip. Entering Ukraine via neighboring Poland is viewed as the main option. Kishida could make the visit over a weekend, so it doesn’t disrupt his work with the parliament that’s kicking off its session on January 23.
