On October 21, the opening ceremony of the "Mingachevir Regatta-2022" rowing competition was held in Sugovushan village, Tartar. At the beginning of the event, the National Anthem of the Republic of Azerbaijan was played for the audience. Which was then followed by the presentation of the participating countries.
SIA reports that Farhad Aliyev, general secretary of Azerbaijan Canoe and Rowing Federation (AKAF), speaking at the event, spoke about the state's special care and attention for sports field in Azerbaijan. He noted that AKAF is holding its second international tournament in the territories liberated from occupation. The first competition - "President's Cup-2022" was hosted by Sugovushan in May.
Wishing success to the participants, Aliyev noted: "Rowing regatta received the status of the All-Union during 1970s. The competition was organized even after the years of restoration of independence. Due to the pandemic, the tournament was suspended for a while. It is good news that this competition has been included in the official calendar plan of the European Canoe Association."
Turkish Canoe Federation President Alper Kabakci, Serbian Rowing Federation Board member Dushan Kovacevic and Hungarian Coaches Committee Chairman Zoltan Olferdi made speeches at the event as well. The representatives praised the sports infrastructure created in our country and expressed their gratitude to AKAF management for the great organization.
The Minister of Youth and Sports of Azerbaijan, Farid Gayibov, noted that the first international tournament organized by AKAF was held for the first time in the liberated territories in May: "We have gathered in Sugovushan for the second time. The organization of international tournaments was possible as a result of the construction works carried out in the liberated areas by the order of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev. It is gratifying that representatives of other federations participated in the opening ceremony and showed unity."
After Qayibov declared the rowing regatta open, participants and veterans of the Patriotic War participating in the ceremony were greeted.
After the end of the official part, there were exemplary performances of the participating countries.
On the first day of the tournament, 200-meter kayak and canoe races were held in Sugovushan. The Azerbaijani team won 4 gold, 6 silver and 4 bronze medals.
This is the second international tournament organized by AKAF in our territories liberated from occupation. Earlier, the federation organized the "President's Cup-2022" international rowing regatta dedicated to the 99th anniversary of the birth of national leader Heydar Aliyev in Sugovushan.
On October 22-23, the "Mingachevir Regatta" rowing competition will continue at the "Kur" Olympic Education and Sports Center. In Mingachevir, paddlers will compete in both kayak and canoe, as well as academic kind. The winners will be awarded with diplomas, medals and cups.
